Children Disaster Relief Fund
January 14, 2010
Dear Friend of Children,
Thank you for your past support which may have included gifts to the Friends of Children Disaster Relief Fund. The American Academy of Pediatrics has used this fund in the past to respond to disasters that affect children in the U.S., such as Hurricanes Katrina and Ike, and worldwide, such as recent earthquakes in China.
Because we have this fund in place today, we have resources we can utilize immediately to support the pediatricians in Haiti and the children and families they care for.
As we know, Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, was struck on Tuesday by the strongest earthquake in more than 200 years. There are reports of severe damage to homes and buildings, including a hospital that has collapsed. U.S. officials report hundreds of thousands of people dead and injured, and aid officials have described the scene as "total disaster and chaos."
Your Friends of Children Disaster Relief Fund at the AAP is there when it is needed most. This fund is designated to help in all types of natural and man-made disasters in the following ways:
- Provide emergency relief to pediatricians and the children they treat;
- Address primary health care needs of children;
- Support for physicians to provide medical services
(example: power generators for medical facilities, replacement of medical equipment damaged by the disaster);
- Support future disaster preparedness and response programs with a special focus on children.
We would like to do more for the children and families in Haiti, and to make sure this fund is ready and able to help out not only today, but in the future, wherever the need is greatest.
If you haven't supported this fund in the past, or even if you already have, please consider making a contribution today.
