Travel Nursing and Excellent People Skills
"There are two types of people - those who come into a room and say "Well, here I am!" and those who come in and say "Ah, there you are!" Frederick L. Collins
Travelling nurse jobs put you in the position of meeting a lot of new people and having exposure to many different procedure and policies implemented by the many health care facilities to which you are assigned. Practicing excellent people and communication skills will give you an edge up in smoothly integrating into the established routine. Travel nursing personnel find they are highly rewarded when they can remain open and flexible to new experiences and methods of achieving the best results.
The most important quality you can exhibit is professionalism. Travel nursing provides a service to the healthcare industry that is invaluable and it takes a special kind of dedication to fill the need. Always remember that you are a guest while on assignment and you will do far better by cooperating respectfully with the permanent staff. You have the definite advantage of a broader knowledge base due to the fact you have worked alongside many experts in their fields. You can share what you have learned without “stepping on toes.”
The ability to quickly build rapport with your coworkers while on travel nursing assignments is a bonus. There are several ways you can encourage this.
- Be a great listener. Rather than barging into a new situation and telling everyone what you know, take the time to introduce yourself, say why you are there and find out how you can best serve others. Do this by taking the time to find out who the people are in your new team and listening openly while they explain their points of view. You will do well with travelling nurse jobs when your coworkers know you genuinely care about them.
- Keep a positive attitude. Approaching people with a smile on your face sets the mood for the best kind of communication. Always look for solutions to challenges rather than complaining about difficult the task is. Encourage the people around you. Don’t get involved in local gossip or make judgments. Follow through on your commitments.
- Do your best. Travel nursing assignments may place you in some of the more challenging shifts or environments than the permanent staff, but do your best, regardless. Remember that in most cases you are earning far better wages than your coworkers. Being proficient and efficient is a must. Be a team player and always look for ways you can do more, rather than less.
