San Francisco is located on a Northern California Peninsula, surrounded by the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate strait, and Pacific Ocean. When you take a travel nursing assignment in San Francisco, be prepared to wear several layers of clothing as the city is not as warm as many other parts of the state. Though the temperature in San Francisco is fairly moderate throughout the year, with lows venturing into the mid 40’s F and highs usually only reaching into the mid-70’s F, San Francisco’s hills can cause temperatures to vary widely throughout the area. The average January temperature is 52.3 F and average August temperature is 62.4 F, with an annual average temperature of 58.6° F. From November through March, San Francisco will also receive around 80 percent of its annual 22.1 inches of precipitation, so you might need an umbrella during this time! Fog is common in San Francisco throughout the year, particularly on summer mornings, but it adds a pleasant chill to the atmosphere. San Francisco Bay area is a nature-lover’s paradise. Ocean Beach is a great spot for advanced surfing, enjoying a picnic, or playing a game of volleyball. Due to strong riptides (and cold water temperatures), swimming is not recommended for this area.
One of San Francisco’s main attractions is the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge. Visitors can easily walk or jog the length of the bridge, stopping to take in the view of the city from Vista Point. Golden Gate State Park, San Francisco’s biggest park, is home to beautiful lakes and gardens, as well as playgrounds, museums, aquariums, and more. There’s also Presidio Park, on the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate Bridge, where visitors can explore historical architecture, an airfield, cemetery, beaches, forests, and breathtaking bay views.
About 15 miles beyond the Golden Gate Bridge is Muir Woods which boasts a majestic forest including ancient redwoods reaching over 250 feet tall! If you are a hiker, you may want to travel beyond Muir Woods onto Mount Tamalpais, which boasts a 2,571-foot peak with gorgeous hiking and biking trails. Angel Island, accessible by ferry from the city, is another great biking/hiking location with amazing views.
San Francisco has an impressive array of dining, sports, arts, and entertainment options to consider. Fisherman’s Wharf is home to some of San Francisco’s premier seafood cuisine, like the scenic Franciscan Crab and Alito’s, the oldest and one of the finest fresh seafood restaurants. If you like seafood, Alito’s is a must-see… and taste! ANZU offers visitors a spectacular blend of Asian & Californian cuisine. Bay Area professional sports teams include the MLB Giants and Athletics, NBA Golden State Warriors, NFL 49ers and Raiders. World-class museums include the Californian Academy of Sciences, Museum of Modern Art, and famous former island prison of Alcatraz. The San Francisco Symphony, Opera, and ballet are some of the most well-established fine arts venues in the United States.
Festivals and events abound year-round in the San Francisco area, such as the Sea Lion’s Arrival, Chinese New Year, and St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Alcatraz Island is the site of the infamous former high-security prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners who continuously caused trouble at other federal prisons, and throughout its 29-year tenure, the jail held some of the most notorious criminals in American history. The prison was closed in 1963 and the island is now a national recreation area. The island offers tours of the prison and the Alcatraz lighthouse, the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States.
The Coit Tower, also known as the Lillian Colt Memorial Tower, is an art deco tower that was built in 1933 to help make San Francisco more beautiful. The tower, located atop Telegraph Hill in Pioneer Park, boasts an astounding view of San Francisco that includes breathtaking perspectives of Alcatraz, Pier 39, Angel Island, Treasure Island and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.
The towns that neighbor San Francisco are also great for exploring. Sausalito, California is a beautiful, picturesque community located on the bay. Sausalito has a rich history with roots dating back to the 19th century. The city was a center for bootlegging during prohibition and a major hub for industrialization during World War II.
